In one of those strange coincidences in the Fraser Ross Associates stable, we’re proud to present not one but TWO picture books featuring cows.
Magna Cow emerged from the fevered imagination of Barry Hutchison – and she’s the star of his first picture book, published by the small but perfectly formed publisher, Little Door Books.
Brisket (I know – what a brilliant name!) isn’t the most popular cow in the herd as she attracts metal which plays havoc with cow life. Eventually she’s sent off to inhabit a far corner of the field. She’s just too much of a liability.
Some illustrators might have balked at the idea of a cow with magnetic qualities, but not Cate James – she rose to the challenge from her studio in Sydney, Australia.
Brisket is a wonderful character – and (spoiler alert…) those magnetic qualities save both the day and bovine lives, restoring the lonely cow to the heart of the herd. We can’t wait to hear how Barry responds to the inevitable ‘Where do you get your ideas from?’ question at his Edinburgh International Book Festival event in August.
Now, meet Hettie.
She’s the star of the new picture book by Jo Allan – Hide-and-Seek Hettie – and this is the third story about Hettie, published by Floris Books.
This time, Hettie is alarmed to see Granny, Kirstie and Callum arriving armed with everything required to give her a bath. Well, she’s having none of it. No self-respecting highland cow likes a wash.
But hiding is hard when you’re a highland cow…
Will she get away with it?
Of course not – and (another spoiler alert…) – it turns out that bath time isn’t such a disaster after all.
